Abandoned Part 44

Hey kid. Great parking kid. The locking is a real doozy. Yeah, ya got the wheel and ya got the frame. Good on you kid. But don’t leave it in a dark corner. You got no protection. Know what I’m sayin’?

You want my advice kid? If it’s an overnighter? A real long one? Don’t be a putz. find a good place. Somewhere well lit and watched. Better still, stick it inside. Lock it up tight. Lock it to a frickin’ DOBERMAN. Put it away and just fugheddaboudit.

This is a theoretical conversation with a travelling cycle parking critic from Brooklyn. Just……because. He seemed to be loitering in the vicinity.

This bike – left parked outside PDR at Cardiff Metropolitan University – has fallen prey to night-time vultures of the allen key wielding variety. If you park your cycle overnight, DO choose your locations carefully and avoid dark corners. Of course, we shouldn’t have to worry about this sort of nonsense. But regrettably, we do. It’s the world we live in.

Wherever possible, lock your rear wheel, front wheel and frame, using facilities that are within public and – where possible – CCTV view.

If you come back to your bike to find it decimated by detritivores, please think about passing any unwanted bits to local social enterprises such as The Cardiff Cycle workshopThe Bristol Bike Project,  ReCycling (London), Bicycle recycling (Gosport) or The Bike Station (Glasgow). This is part of an ongoing series to highlight cycle security, abandoned and vandalised bikes.
