Quote – Of flesh and steel

“The cyclist is a man half made of flesh and half of steel that only our century of science and iron could have spawned”

Louis Baudry De Saunier, Histoire General De La Velocipedie, 1891

A typically philosophical Gaulic observation, made during the century that provided the vehicle that transports and excites us, amuses us and delights us, all in equal measure. Whilst modern manufacturing materials have arguably moved far beyond the traditional, I still prefer steel as the true frame building choice; a metal derived from rock and a perfect metaphor for the fabric of its riders.
