A huge thank you to Matt and the Acycling.com army of helpers for this weekend’s superb Battle on the Beach. With the event growing from 220 or so last year, to a whopping 600+ this year. If you’ve not heard of Battle on the Beach, you’re missing a treat; The UKs only Beach cycle race, held at the beautiful Pembrey Coastal Park near Llanelli, the course comprises of open beach, sand dunes, tracks and forest singletrack. Think of it as a salty long distance version of a cyclo-cross race. Despite only being in its second year, the event feels like a firm fixture – and favourite – in the calendar.
After, a mad, brilliant, chaotic start (pictured above), club mate Mel Alexander once again took the honours in the ladies race, whilst those wiley riders from the Benelux managed to bag top spots in the Open (Ramses Bekkenk winning).
As for my performance? Let’s just say I was happy to get around, enjoyed going hard in places and enjoyed seeing my JIF team-mates turn in some excellent rides. That first race of the season is always…….fun. Suffice to say I’ll be back next year to once again kick the year off in style.
Well done – as ever – to Acycling.com. Organisers of highly recommended cycling events.
