Love these images of Marshall Taylor by Eliza Southwood. If you’ve not heard of Marshall Taylor, his story is remarkable. In an age of acute racial discrimination, Marshall Taylor confounded critics and detractors by winning the world one mile track championships in 1899. He went on to compete on the European tour, winning 40 of his 57 races and beating the champions of the Great Britain, Germany and France. Sadly, despite a glittering career and huge earnings (by the measure of the time), he died in poverty at the age of 53. There have been several books published on Marshall Taylor’s incredible life and Boneshaker recently produced an excellent short article.
