Load those Bullitts
How about these little beauties? These are the rather fantastic Bullitt bikes from Copenhagen. Weighing only a little bit more than a regular town bike, these cargo bikes will let you carry the mail, weekly shop, hairy dog (see video), children, kitchen sink and – I have no doubt – my entire collection of cycle related literature.
And that’s a lot.
I’ve seen a cycle courier in Cardiff zipping around on something very similar. We often acknowledge each other with a cheery wave or brief exchange of pleasantries at traffic lights. If they stay red long enough I’ll be sure to ask him where he got it, how much it cost, whether he would recommend one and what his views are on burnt orange as the colour de jour. You have to respect a courier’s view on these things.
To me, these answer another of those tricky questions; how can I avoid using the car, but do everything I need to do? Every day I walk my daughter to school, whilst pushing my bike along the payment . The road is too busy to allow my daughter to cycle (and it really is, I’m not a risk averse overbearing Dad). With one of these bad boys, I could put her in the front, attach panniers to the side (for the ultimate load carrying capability), ride defensively, turn up all smug and timely AND buy a major amount of groceries on the way home (making full use of the journey home). Where do I sign up?
If the market for these lovely things ever grows, we’ll be busy redesigning our entire product catalogue and adding another 3ft or so on the length of just about everything. I look forward to that day.
